Future Leaders Fellowships in STFC National Laboratories

 

As part of the UK's national laboratories, STFC's Particle Physics Department and Accelerator Science and Technology Centre construct, operate and scientifically exploit the world's most advanced particle accelerators and particle physics experiments. Alongside the construction and upgrade of current machines (HL-LHC, PIP-II) and experiments (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, DUNE, Hyper-K, LZ, AION), we are starting to plan R&D towards new international facilities, including:

 

• Future electron-positron colliders (ILC, FCCee, CEPC)​
  
• Future energy-frontier colliders (FCChh, muon collider)
  
• Next-generation dark matter and low-background experiments
• Particle and astrophysics experiments using quantum sensors and interferometers
• New advanced computing infrastructure, including quantum computing​​​​​

 ​​​​​​​​W​e anticipate substantial investment in these areas over the coming five years, as part of the R&D roadmap of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The UK will target a combination of focussed project-specific developments and long term 'blue skies' R&D.

 
We seek early career particle physicists, accelerator physicists and computing experts, with a strong research record, to propose new R&D projects to the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship scheme. These fellowships are highly competitive, and awarded in support of ambitious projects over a four-to-seven year time scale. Projects which make use of major STFC facilities, which develop UK leadership, which seek to bring together expertise across disciplines, and which will support UK scientific ambitions in future experiments, are of particular interest.

 
Fellows will be appointed to a permanent position within STFC equivalent to senior lecturer / associate professor, and will receive funding for a team of postdocs and students, research equipment and travel. Fellows will be expected to take a senior role within the department in their area of expertise, and to provide leadership at national and international level in the future. Applicants of any nationality are welcome.
