The Versatile Electron Linear Accelerator (VELA) photoinjector consists of a 2.5 cell S-band RF gun using copper photocathodes. The electron gun has been provided to ASTeC on a long-term loan from the University of Strathclyde. The gun was originally designed to provide low emittance, short pulses of electrons for the ALPHA-X laser wakefield acceleration project. A sub-100 fs UV laser will drive the electron gun.
