Hugh joined ASTeC on the STFC graduate scheme in 2021 having graduated with a master's degree in physics from Lancaster University in 2020. As a member of the Photocathode Research and Development team, Hugh's primary focus is studying high brightness electron sources for next generation electron accelerators. Using ASTeC's Transverse Energy Spread Spectrometer (TESS) and the Multiprobe surface science analysis system, Hugh has worked on metal, caesium telluride and metal oxide coated photocathodes. Hugh is also significantly involved in the construction of the Alkali-metal Photocathode Preparation Facility (APPF), a new vacuum system with a focus on growing caesium telluride photocathodes for characterisation using Multiprobe and TESS and eventual use in the VELA and CLARA accelerators.
