Space technology applications of STFC electron beam facilities

At the Linac Test Facility (LTF), we specialise in radiation hardness testing for solar cells and electronics for space. Our high-energy electron and X-ray irradiation capabilities allow you to evaluate how your components perform in harsh space environments before they leave Earth.

Located at STFC Daresbury Laboratory, our facility provides controlled, flexible electron irradiation services for both industry and academia. Whether you need validation of component tolerance or performance studies, we can help you test the effects of radiation exposure with precision and reliability.

What we offer

  • Radiation hardness testing of solar cells for space and electronic components.
  • Electron and X-ray irradiation to simulate space and high-radiation environments
  • Customisable test setups in a spacious, fully shielded test cell with easy access for client equipment
  • Flexible engagement — from one-off tests to collaborative R&D programmes

Key Beam Parameters

Electron energy:

  • 1 – 6 MeV; covering the Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells (AIAA S-111A-2014)

Fluence:

  • Up to 0.7 µA at 1.1 MeV (≈0.44×10¹³ particles/s·cm²)
  • Up to 2.5 µA at 6 MeV (≈1.55×10¹³ particles/s·cm²)
  • X-ray dose rate: Up to 1600 Rads/min at 50 cm (≈2×10¹⁰ particles/s·cm²)

Beam profile:

  • Adjustable static beam size for multiple sample or larger-area devices
  • At 1 MeV: up to 20 cm × 5 cm with >90% uniformity

Why work with us

Our team is challenge-led and flexible, tailoring every project to your testing requirements. Further STFC facilities, RAL Space and ChipIR, are on the forefront of UK’s space program and provide capabilities for the needs of the next generation of spacecraft and instruments.
