PIP II - Phase Two Proton Improvement Plan
PIP II is the phase two proton improvement plan which is an essential upgrade to the FNALs accelerators at Fermilab to provide protons at sufficient energy and intensity to impact a target and generate neutrinos. Here at Daresbury Laboratories, we are working on the Elliptical HB650 which is made up of 24 cavities at 650 MHz, the HB650 is in collaboration with the USA and India. Working with UKRI, Fermilab and DAE. The UK team will deliver three cryomodules and one set of parts for the fourth. Each cryomodule compromises 6 niobium cavities and the intricate systems required to provide radiofrequency energy to the beam at 650 MHz. These specific cryomodules worked on by the UK team will provide the final boost to the proton beams velocity to 92% the speed of light.
Partners and collaborators
- USA, India and the UK
- STFC(UKRI), Fermilab, Sanford underground research facility , DAE, CEA
Objectives
- To deliver three high beta superconducting RF cryomodules and one set of parts for fourth cryomodule as per the Fermilab designs
Milestones
- SRF infrastructure, modify existing facilities and provision for a new cleanroom
- Implementation of new cryomodule vessel assembly fixtures
- Development of the EBW processes for niobium material
- Provision of all SRF cavity fabrication facilities
- Procurement of niobium material and cavity fabrication
- Integration of testing infrastructure and validate
- Prepare the HB650 and assemble string in the cleanroom
- Integrate the cavity string into the cryomodule vessel
- Transport the integrated cryomodule to FNAL and acceptance test
Statistics and Data
- Each cryomodule comprises 6 niobium cavities (cooled to permit super-conductance) and the systems required to provide radiofrequency energy to the beam at 650 MHz, these cryomodules will provide the final boost to the proton beam’s velocity to 92% of the speed of light.
- The UK PIP-II project team will deliver three cryomodules and 1 set of parts for a fourth cryomodule, per Fermilab’s designs
